Emotionalism & Current Topics

I have noticed lately the internet fuels those arguments where people get emotionally involved. Most of these topics are in gray areas with both sides having a proven point, however some of these stances are because it is what internally feels good. This is an exact reponse to “do what feels right” mentality. This is never the way to go.  The bible speaks exact truth and with these truth is will inevitably disagree with the internal human struggle for some people.
There is a group i took over called “You Know Your Pentecostal If” which was founded in 2011 after North American Youth Congress as a way for connections. I’m sad to say that Facebook would never let me change “Your” to “You’re” but its a humor group so its a humorous title i suppose. There are always hot topics that would come up which would be such as Women’s place in ministry, clothing and the never ending debates on baptism and Godhead.
The problem that arose with these topics we’re always when some one was emotionally invested. This investment seemed to cause them ignore facts presented to them, at times they even regarded facts as arguments. The truth is that this investment didn’t make them bad people, just a little misguided. There was, and is, far too many who take a clear cut Scripture and respond with “this does not apply to me, because…”
Watching these discussions made me realize that we have a need for revival in the study of logic and hermeneutics. We need to understand the proper way to think with our intelligence and not our emotions, listen to people who disagree with us, consider why they think that they do, and respond in a way that addresses those opposing thoughts, opinions, and facts.
Emotionalism injected in a disagreement always made the topic so much more fiery. This caused name calling and feelings to be hurt. The internet is a rough ground and if you have a chip on your should while discussing something it will for sure be knocked off and stomped into the ground. This is how the internet has always worked, this is mostly due to the faceless communication happening. It is human nature to dehumanize the other person when you’re not directly effected by the harm you have caused. This is actually called the “YouTube Effect” because of the prevalence of this in YouTube comments.
One major reason for this emotional involvement is because There is because a family member directly affected by the topic. Women in ministry and clothing is always a knock down, drag out discussion because both sides are emotionally involved. Because of the dehumanizations of the other side, both sides say things far more harshly than they would in real life without realizing it, but it’s taken just as it would if said off of the Internet. Add to this that people who are speaking from emotion tend to pick hills and die on them no matter what simply because they refuse to admit error.
I have always advocated a logical look at topics and a realization that other opinions do exist and have value. I believe That the biggest and worst fight i’ve ever seen happen when People perceive something as a heaven or hell issue. People with good intentions get involved in a conversation that is heated and it ends up blowing up. Years ago, issues like this made me realize an amazing concept. There definitely are “heaven and hell” issues, however far more things fall under the umbrella of “better off without”. The truth is that our emotional attachment to an issue doesn’t change whether something is salvational or not.
We must strive to keep our emotional attachment in check while discussing issues. this will not only make us better at communicating our point but also allow us to, if necessary, bow out of the conversation before it blows up. While you may be seen as losing the battle, the true war is for salvation and that war is never won with an argument. The thought that we are solely responsible for another person’s salvation is foolish. We can only water or plant, but ultimately God must give the increase. Our seed of truth may help some one else along the way to plant and God will work on them to give them an increase.
Some Scripture to remember:
“But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:15‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭9:22‬ ‭KJV‬‬
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.”
‭‭Hosea‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬
Thank you.
